  • Sifnos is the fourth island in the group of the western Cyclades

    Khea - Kythnos- Serifos - Sifnos - Kimolos - Milos - Folegandros.
    The island is 74 km2 large and is located 120 km off of the coast of Athens. The highest mountain is Proph. Ilias (680 m.)

    Weather/Climate
    December, January, February - Aegean winter - comparable with German April weather. Exception - January has a short period called the little Summer.
    March, April, May, June = Springtime, nearing summer temperatures.
    June, July, August, September - Summer
    September, October, November - Late summer, beginning of fall.
    Swimming in the ocean depends on your individual resistance to cold in the months Mar.-April and Oct.- Nov.

    History
    3000 B.C: early Bronze - Karer and Phoenicians inhabit the island and with the Neolithics form the 'early' cycladic culture.
    1600 B.C.: late Bronze - Sifnos is under the cultural and economical hegemony of the Minoans of Crete 1100 B.C.: Ionians inhabit the island.

    800 B.C.: Rising development of an ethnic patriotism. Development of city-states. Sifnos is under the dominance of Milos. Gold is discovered on the island.

    500 B.C.: Sifnos becomes a member of the alliance of Greek city-states and takes part in the battles of Marathon, Salamis, and Platea to defeat the Persians. Sifnos joins the Delian alliance. Hegemony of Athens.

    383 B.C.: Under power of Phillip of Macedonia.

    323 B.C.: Attack of the Persians. Rescue by Alexander the Great. Sifnos underlies the power of Ptolemeis of Egypt after Alexander's death.

    146 B.C.: Rise of the Roman Empire.

    395A.D.: Split of the Roman Empire. Sifnos underlies Constantinople (Byzantine Empire). 1207 A.D.: Sifnos under Venetian Power.

    1307 A.D.: "Antonio de Coronia" names himself Lord of Sifnos. Kastro becomes first city on the island. Later on Sifnos is given to Nikolas Gozzadino of Bologna (Ita.).

    1537 A.D.: Suleiman the Great drives the Venetians of the island. 1568 A.D.: Return of the Venetians.

    1617 A.D.: The Turks take over Sifnos until 1830, with the exception of the Russian occupation of Greece during the Russian - Turkish war (1768-74).

    1821 A.D.: Start of the Greek rebellion against the Turkish occupation. Sifnos participates in the fights - the Turks answer by way of stationing a Turkish fleet in Sifnos. With the help of dominant allied forces the Turks are defeated in the battle of Navarino.

    1829 A.D.: Greece becomes independent state under the protection of allied powers.
