Cycladic Light
The Artists' Museum is pleased to invite the public to view 50 photographs of the beautiful Cycladic Islands in the center of Greece's Aegean Sea by Washington photographer Chris Keeley.
A graduate of the Corcoran School of Art, who usually specializes in portraits of people and social issues, also applies his talent and keen eye to special landscapes. In 1993 he had a one-person show at the Charles Sumner School Museum of the churches, icons and pigeon houses on the island of Sifnos where Keeley spends part of every summer.
This recent exhibition includes subjects and others, including classical architectural interiors, structures and ancient ruins recently captured on the islands of Santorini, Hydra, Mykonos, Delos, Naxos, Syros, Amorgos, and Folegandros.
These photographs display the striking characteristic colors of the mostly unspoiled islands: the stark whites of the churches and cubist houses, the browns of the earth, the mauves and grays of the barren, rocky mountains, the greens of the olive, palm and pine trees, the shimmering blues of the Aegean Sea, the weathered ivory of the classical temples and sculptures, the multicolored fishing boats and the gold, silver and candlelight of the church interiors.
This world-renowned unique Cycladic light has been known to artists since classical times and is indeed a vey special combination of colors that are vividly portrayed in those Cibachrome print photographs.
This show will run at the Artists' Museum from December 2nd, 1999 through January 14th, 2000. Regular gallery hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays from 11 am to 6 pm. A public reception for the artist will be held on Friday, December 10th, from 6 to 8 pm. The gallery will also be open after hours for the third thursday, December 16th, from 6 to 8 pm.
The Artists' Museum is convieniently located at 406 Seventh Street NW, just one block from the Archives or Gallery Place metro stop.
